JEE Advanced 2026 has for the first time made it to the list of more than 10,000 female candidates who have qualified for the exam. The announcement along with the list of qualifiers marks a historic feat in the area of gender representation for admission in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The police also announced that the overall pass rate of the IIT admissions was the highest this year.

What is the Reason Behind Higher Number of Female Candidates?

According to official statistics, female qualifiers have for the first time surpassed the 10,000 mark, in the history of the exam. The upsurge in female qualifiers also leads to a higher overall percentage of male and female candidates who are passing out with the aspiration of getting seat in IIT, which brings out the enhancement of participation and performance of aspirants in the qualification process.

This trend is likely to alter the age demographics of the cohorts and may have an impact on gender balance across the branches.

The availability of quality preparation (via online, adaptive learning, expanded coaching outreach) has helped performance levels to improve. It is likely that these are all related to school-level STEM encouragement, targeted mentoring programs, and STEM scholarships for girls.

For example, the increased presence of women in the engineering profession has been a motivation to increase the number of female engineers.

The higher number of female candidates who qualified will be seen as actual numbers of girls at IITs and the branch where they will turn them. The hostel capacity, safety protocols and mentoring support may have to be reviewed on campus for the increased number of females enrolled. More scholarships, outreach to women and improved counseling services are some policy interventions that can be done.
