The push to put the current US president on the $250 bill stems from a legislative push led by House Republicans. Dubbed the Donald J. Trump $250 Bill Act (H.R. 1761), the bill was originally introduced by Representative Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) and has since gained renewed traction ahead of the nation's milestone birthday.

Because federal law currently bars any living person from being depicted on U.S. legal tender, the Trump 250-dollar bill legislation seeks a specific statutory exemption.

Why is the New $250 Bill Drawing Controversy at the Treasury?

While political leaders rally behind the commemorative design, internal resistance at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) recently boiled over. According to official reports first published by The Washington Post, Treasury appointees Brandon Beach and Mike Brown aggressively pressured civil service staff to develop physical sample notes long before any law had been passed.

Former BEP Director Patricia “Patty” Solimene reportedly clashed with administration officials over the timeline, emphasizing that executing complex anti-counterfeiting security features for high-value notes traditionally takes six to eight years. 

Following her pushback, Solimene was abruptly reassigned from her post in late April, stating in a farewell email to colleagues that the move was "not my choice."

Defending the agency's proactive preparation, Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed criticisms of the planning process. He asserted that the Treasury frequently drafts logistical layouts in advance of anticipated congressional actions, comparing the currency project to policy blueprints drawn up months ahead of major tax guidance packages.

When will the Trump $250 bill be released?

There is no set release date for the Trump $250 banknote, as its ultimate survival relies on a razor-thin legislative timeline. While the Republican-controlled House may clear the bill for a floor vote, the proposal faces a steep uphill battle in the Senate, where it would require a 60-vote bipartisan majority to overcome an expected Democratic filibuster.

Should the legislation fail to clear both chambers before the conclusion of the 119th Congress, the bill will officially expire, forcing lawmakers to reintroduce the concept in the next session. 

Concurrently, the administration is bypassing Congress where legally possible, finalizing plans for a separate commemorative 24-karat gold coin and a circulating 1-dollar Trump coin for the 2026 celebrations.
